Coimbatore Commuters Demand Full-Width Road Laying to Ensure Safety

Commuters in Coimbatore have raised concerns over poorly relaid roads that are narrower than the original width, leading to uneven surfaces and posing serious safety risks, especially for two-wheeler riders. One of the major issues reported is a noticeable height gap between newly-laid stretches and the older road surface, causing instability while riding. In several areas, including busy roads and residential localities, commuters observed that the new road surface does not extend to the full width of the original road. This results in a steep edge or dip, making it difficult to park and maneuver vehicles, particularly near stormwater drains. The mismatch in road levels has reportedly caused frequent wobbling and near-miss accidents among two-wheeler users. Public welfare groups have pointed out that laying roads without proper milling of the old surface leads to dangerous elevation differences. They stress that such flaws are not due to user error but are the result of poor engineering practices. Concerns have also been raised over whether proper planning is followed before roadwork begins. Authorities have responded by instructing engineering teams to ensure that all road relaying is done at the full original width, and that any deviation will be corrected.
